Saleen has been synonymous with the Ford Mustang ever since company founder Steve Saleen mounted a supercharger into one in 1985 and has since been making performance ponies ever since. Now the brand pulls the sheet off of its latest iteration, the 2015 Saleen 302 Black Label Mustang.
The Black Label is the chart topping trim of the 302 line, based off of the brand new Generation of Ford Mustangs. It takes the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 already under the hood of the new GT, then adds a twin-screw supercharger, giving the muscle car a whopping 730 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque.
“From the beginning of this project, we have always known that we wanted to create the most powerful production Mustang we have ever built”, said Sven Etzelsberger, V.P. of Engineering. “I can happily say that we have accomplished this goal with great success.”
Helping drivers hold the reins of this mighty Mustang is an update to the new independent suspension it now sports. Saleen S4 springs, sway bars, and shocks are added, plus a set of 15-inch rotors and multi-piston brakes to bring everything to a halt. The 20-inch 5- spoke alloys are shod in 275/35R20 tires in the front and 275/40R20 tires in the back to keep the car gripped to the road.
Helping that grip is the new exterior design that Saleen has given the Black Label 302. Not only giving it a distinct appearance, the exterior bodywork lengthens the front by an inch and a half and almost two inches in the back, which increases the airfoil, adding downforce. A Saleen-exclusive rear wing and a front air splitter balance out the whole package.
Those keen can get one for themselves by going to the carmaker’s website and preparing to part with $73,214. We’d get a move on, too. If what we heard in November is true, there might not be many more Saleen Mustangs on the horizon.
