Today, Hyundai revealed the significant refresh done on its Elantra GT, the sportier hatchback cousin to the Elantra compact sedan.

Right off the bat, the new Elantra GT distinguishes itself with a very prominent grill redesign, that features horizontal chrome and argent slats. The new assertive look is more in line with the design language of other current Hyundai models. Wraparound headlamps further the sporty look and fluidic accents like the chrome belt line molding give the GT a more dynamic sense of movement.

Under the hood, the Elantra GT carries over the 2.0-liter four-cylinder direct-injection engine that gives it an output of 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. This is all sent to the front wheels by either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed electronic automatic with a manual shift mode.

While the Elantra sedan is more comfort-tuned, the GT is given a bit more feel and responsiveness. The fitted McPherson strut front suspension receives a little more sporty refinement while the torsion beam in the back gets a stiffer upgrade. This all rides on a new set of newly styled 17-inch alloy wheels.

Electronic selectable steering modes make a return, allowing drivers to choose a floaty comfort feel to the wheel, a stiffer sport mode, or a normal setting that mixes elements of both.

The interior has been refined, keeping the standards other vehicles in the product lineup have kept. A new 7.0-inch touchscreen navigation system adorns the center console, which displays, among other things, the view from the Elantra GT’s new mechanized rear view camera. The camera tucks away behind the Hyundai badge when not in use. Driver and passenger also get treated to ventilated seats, which is a first for this segment.

Starting at $18,800, the Elantra GT will be available to customers as early as this March.
