When the 2017 Ford GT was announced at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, there was a lot to love — amazing looks, 600-plus horsepower, and an undeniable nostalgia factor. As time passed, we were treated to additional details such as the crazy price tag and the materials that make up its “hybrid windshield,” but Ford has saved one of the best reveals for last.
In addition to the standard 10-spoke aluminum wheels, the American supercar will offer lightweight carbon-fiber wheels much like the Shelby GT350R Mustang. Unlike the track-bred pony car, though, the GT’s shoes will be offered in either a matte or glossy clear-coat, allowing the beautiful carbon weave to shine through.
“Ford was the innovator as the first to offer a mass-produced carbon-fiber wheel as a standard offering on Shelby GT350R Mustang,” said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance. “Now, Ford GT will offer the next generation in carbon-fiber wheels, with an advanced resin and fiber technology that gives our designers more freedom, while also showcasing the structure of the material’s weave.”
While carbon-fiber wheels certainly look cool, aesthetics are just one part of Ford’s decision to include them on the new GT. According to the brand, each wheel is two pounds lighter than its aluminum counterpart, which is important for overall weight savings but also reduces rotational inertia and unsprung mass. In the end, the carbon technology will improve the car’s acceleration, braking, ride quality, and even handling, as a lighter rim puts less strain on the suspension and other components.

“While metal wheels can act like a bell, the dense, inert nature of carbon fiber provides for overall improved performance in terms of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) and a quieter ride — leading to greater comfort and refinement,” according to Ford. “With optional carbon-fiber wheels providing benefits in key areas — weight savings, vehicle dynamics, NVH, and ride quality — they are the perfect, innovative complement for the all-new Ford GT.”
Unfortunately, very few of us will get to experience the GT’s fancy new kicks anytime soon. As we reported on Monday, the supercar is sold out for two years.
