Square Enix announced that its series-spanning crossover RPG World of Final Fantasy will see a worldwide release this October for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.
Similar in setup to Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts games, World of Final Fantasy presents a storyline in which characters from classic Final Fantasy games meet up in an unfamiliar universe in order to battle evil forces.
World of Final Fantasy puts players in control of amnesiac twins Lann and Reynn, who journey to recover their lost memories. During their quest, the pair will team up with Final Fantasy series characters in what Square Enix describes as “an epic and adorable adventure for a new generation of players.”
In a unique twist, World of Final Fantasy depicts returning Final Fantasy franchise characters in miniature form, while the game’s starring cast members are rendered in a more realistic fashion. The approach effectively unifies the varied character designs and art styles featured in Final Fantasy sequels over the last three decades.
Guest stars appearing in World of Final Fantasy include Final Fantasy VII‘s Cloud, Final Fantasy VIII‘s Squall and Rinoa, and Final Fantasy X‘s Tidus and Yuna. A trailer released this week additionally showcases Final Fantasy IX‘s Vivi, Final Fantasy VI‘s Celes, and Final Fantasy XIII‘s Lightning, among other familiar faces.
Longtime series fans can also expect to see the return of creatures like moogles, chocobos, and cactuars, along with various monsters that can be summoned in battle.
Narrative appears to be a major focus for World of Final Fantasy, and characters converse with voiced dialogue during lengthy cutscenes. Notably, the spinoff reunites many veteran actors who voiced characters in previous Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games in order to reprise their roles.
World of Final Fantasy launches digitally and at retail for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in North America on October 25. A European release is scheduled for October 28.

Each version of Link has a distinct story, but they are all known for their incredible courage, loyalty, and dedication to protecting the innocent. However, he has also shown many times that he can be silly, reckless, rageful, guilty, and tempted by greed. Link doesn’t necessarily have to speak in the film to appeal to audiences. However, he just can't be a one-dimensional fantasy hero. We have to see how multifaceted a person Link is as he grows and reacts to everything, carrying such a heavy burden as the Hero of Hyrule.
