How to get all pets in Stardew Valley

Although having a pet cat or dog has been a longtime feature in Stardew Valley, the significant 1.6 update has allowed players to own more than just one pet. Not only that, but developer ConcernedApe added turtles as an entirely new type of pet to this charming farming simulator.

Adopting more pets isn’t as easy as it may sound, and you’ll have to prove that you can take care of more than just one creature at a time. If you’re ready to take that leap and want as many pets as possible in Stardew Valley, we’ll explain how you can adopt more animals in the 1.6 update, which is now available for console and mobile.

Aside from the pet that everyone gets at the start of a Stardew Valley playthrough, players can adopt additional pets once they’ve reached maximum friendship levels with their main pet. Players will get their first pet for free during their first spring once they’ve earned at least 1,000 gold. Marnie will appear outside their door with a dog or a cat, depending on which animal they chose as their favorite during character creation.

Raising friendship levels with your pet is quite easy, but it takes a while to reach 5 full hearts. You can raise your friendship level by petting them and filling their water bowl. Petting them raises it by 12 points while filling their water bowl using your watering can grants six points. The maximum level is 1,000 points total, so it will take you some time before you can reach full animal friendship.

Keep this up, and you’ll eventually spot a message saying that your pet loves you, meaning you’ve maxed out friendship levels. You can also check how far you are in the Animals menu, as well as check if you petted your animal on a particular day. Once this happens, you should wake up the next morning to a letter in your mailbox from Marnie explaining how she’ll now allow you to adopt additional pets after seeing how well you’ve taken care of your initial pet.

Before you can get another animal, make sure you’ve built an additional pet bowl. To do this, visit Robin’s Carpentry Shop and purchase the Pet Bowl. It costs 5,000 gold and 25 hardwood, and it will build instantly. With that done, you can now talk to Marnie and ask to adopt a pet.

While all cats and dogs cost 40,000 gold, pet turtles are a little pricier, with the purple turtle costing a whopping 500,000 gold. Make sure you’ve saved up enough money to purchase a pet license, as it’s a pricey responsibility.
