Paradox’s new strategy sim ‘Age of Wonders: Planetfall’ sounds epic

Age of Wonder: Planetfall will let you build a new civilization from the ruins of a ravaged planet after a cosmic dark age in a 4x turn-based strategy game coming next year for consoles and PC from publisher Paradox..

For strategy game aficionados, Paradox is a familiar name. At the PDXCON in Stockholm, the publisher of Cities: Skylines and Stellaris revealed plans for an ambitious new sci-fi strategy game called Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

The recently acquired Triumph Studios, creators of all the previous entries as well as the Overlord series, will be leading development on the game, Paradox’s Jesse Henning said at the expo. “It’s got everything you would want out of an Age of Wonders game, but it’s space,” he told PC GamesN.

Breaking away from the role-playing fantasy tropes of its predecessors, the latest Age of Wonders sounds more like Civilization: Beyond Earth.

Focusing on planetary empire building, the turn-based game will feature several different paths to victory with competitions among rival Houses. After a cosmic dark age, the remaining survivors will try to forge new civilizations among the remains of a shattered planet.

“Age of Wonders: Planetfall is roughly three years into development, running on a new generation of our multi-platform Creator Engine,” said Triumph CEO Lennart Sas in the announcement. “While the setting is new, we’re confident that Age of Wonders fans will feel right at home exploring the remnants of the Star Union. Our aim is to make a game that greatly expands upon its predecessors, and still employs the core principles that made Age of Wonders such a success.”

The first Age of Wonders was released in 1999, as a combination role-playing game and city builder with an isometric viewpoint and was quickly followed by two sequels. After a ten-year hiatus, many members of the original team reassembled for Age of Wonders III, released in 2013. The game was partly funded by Markus “Notch” Persson of Minecraft fame.

Paradox acquired Triumph Studios in 2017, after Planetfall had been in development for two years.

Along with Planetfall, Paradox also announced another grand strategy game Imperator: Rome. Several new expansion to their current lineup were also showcased — Europa Universalis IV: Dharma, Crusader Kings II: Holy Fury, Hearts of Iron IV: Man the Guns, and Stellaris: Distant Stars.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall will be available sometime in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Imagine tapping a Zelda icon on your iPhone and jumping straight into Hyrule. A new open-source project called nxnative makes that possible by repackaging Switch games you’ve bought into apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with no emulator in the middle.

Why does this run so well on Apple devices?

The Call of Duty franchise has held a special place in my heart ever since I played my first Black Ops game back in 2010. That game's campaign was something else, with twists and turns that culminated in a mind-blowing finale. We can all admit that compared to those older campaigns, the recent CODs have been lackluster at best, and a complete and utter disappointment at worst. The reboot of Modern Warfare did give me some hope, as the first two installments were actually quite good, but the third game left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wasn’t exactly expecting much from Modern Warfare 4.

After recently finishing the campaign, I can say that this installment is nothing like the recent releases and instead feels closer to the franchise’s roots. For the first time in a long while, the campaign comes across as well-crafted rather than rushed to hit a release date. It arrives three years after MW3, and you can see exactly where all that time went. It seems the studio finally made listening to player feedback a priority.

Epic Games has just announced the 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, which is looking to see how much game development can be squeezed into a very short window. This is running from November 12 through November 15.

Participants can work alone or in teams of up to five people, build in Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite, and bring along “as many AI agents as you want.” Epic explicitly encourages coding agents, AI-generated assets, audio tools, writing tools, and other AI systems. The official event page literally says "Vibe your way to $50k.”
