Capcom’s classic survival horror game Resident Evil 2 boasts a gory new coat of paint in an Unreal Engine 4-powered fan remake from Italian indie developer InvaderGames, and a public release is coming soon.

Resident Evil 2 Reborn turns Capcom’s cinematic horror game into a third-person shooter akin to Resident Evil 4, featuring over-the-shoulder aiming and other gameplay improvements. Borrowing HD textures from Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, InvaderGames’ remake also refines Resident Evil 2‘s health system, soundtrack, and character dialog for a modern take on a highly regarded classic.

Resident Evil 2 Reborn also features improved lighting effects, obscuring the game’s army of flesh-eating zombies behind a constant veil of darkness. Players must now use a flashlight and ambient lighting in order to spot undead creatures, adding to the game’s tense atmosphere.

While many Resident Evil series entries have received remakes for modern consoles, Resident Evil 2 is a conspicuous exception. Launched for the original PlayStation in 1998, Resident Evil 2 was later ported to contemporary platforms like the Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast with little in the way of gameplay improvements or remastered content. An unmodified version of 1998’s Resident Evil 2 is available via the PlayStation Network as a PSone Classics release.

Capcom has issued numerous upgraded versions of the original Resident Evil since its initial 1996 release, including a modified port for the Nintendo DS and a significantly overhauled remake for the Nintendo GameCube. The GameCube edition recently resurfaced on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Resident Evil HD Remaster, boasting upgraded textures and a 1080p presentation.

Capcom recently announced that Resident Evil Zero is due for a similar upgrade in 2016 with remastered ports for the PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

Resident Evil 2 Reborn is currently in the alpha stages of development, and a free downloadable version for PC platforms is due to launch this summer.
