Capcom had a bit of a surprise in store for Resident Evil fans during Sony’s PlayStation State of Play presentation on December 10. Though we were almost certain Resident Evil 3 was on the way, it was confirmed as part of a clever fake-out from the company, and it is arriving sooner than we anticipated.

Announced, jokingly, as the campaign mode for the Resident Evil: Resistance spinoff game, Resident Evil 3 is a full remake of the original Resident Evil 3, with the same storyline and once again starring Jill Valentine. She looks a little different here, with a visual design change similar to what Leon Kennedy went through in this year’s Resident Evil 2 remake.

It makes sense that Capcom would produce this remake so soon after Resident Evil 2, as the game’s events take place at almost the exact same time. As Jill Valentine, you’ll go up against the deadly Nemesis creature that was previously included in the original game’s subtitle, which is an extra-special version of the Tyrant enemy type that we saw in Resident Evil 2. She’ll also have to go up against the Umbrella corporation again, and with the Nemesis posing a constant threat throughout the game, you can never really stop and take a breather.

Resident Evil 3 will be bundled with the asymmetric multiplayer game Resident Evil: Resistance, which we previously saw earlier this year. The game puts one player in control of a scenario that the others must overcome, and gives them control of zombies and hazards to make the survivors’ lives more difficult. It’s sure to get more players than it could have otherwise due to it being a free inclusion, though we’re sure most people are going to want to play through the remake first.

Resident Evil 3 is going to release on April 3, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A special collector’s edition of the game featuring a double-sided map, special packaging, collector’s art book, double album soundtrack, and 11-inch Jill Valentine figure will release alongside the standard version, and pre-ordering the game will get you a classic costume pack. It will be interesting to see if Capcom will continue with its remake trend, possibly with the game Code Veronica or Resident Evil 4 — a game that revolutionized horror in its own right.
