The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is one of the cheapest options on the market, but Ring has recently launched its own Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam that’s quickly become popular with shoppers.

But is the expensive Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam better than the Wyze Cam Pan v3? Or should you save yourself a few bucks and opt for the cheaper security camera? Here’s a look at both to help you decide.

The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is much more affordable at $40. What’s most enticing is that it comes with local storage, meaning you don’t necessarily need to spring for an additional monthly subscription. However, adding the Wyze Cam Plus plan for $3 per month gets you cloud history, smart alerts, and more.

Both of these indoor security cameras look a bit strange. The Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam features a circular base connected to an elongated cylinder housing the actual camera. This makes it look quite bulky, but it allows it to rotate for a full 360 degrees of coverage and pivot vertically for even more viewing angles. There’s also a privacy screen that can be manually moved in front of the camera.

The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is essentially two cubes stacked on top of each other. But while it looks awkward, it allows for the same 360-degree room coverage as the Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam. You won’t find a privacy screen on this camera, as it instead enters “Privacy Mode” to angle its camera at the ground and disable both video and audio.

Neither product looks too impressive, but neither looks bad, either. In the end, it’ll come down to personal preference.

Installation is largely the same for both devices, as they’re only available as plug-in cameras. Once you’ve found a good spot for the camera and plugged it into an outlet, you’ll need to sync it with your smartphone. The former lets you use the device without a subscription, while the latter lets you toggle Privacy Mode remotely — for Ring, you need to manually move its privacy screen.

The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is the better security camera for most households. Not only is it cheaper but it still films in the same 1080p as the Ring camera, while also supporting color night vision. Most shoppers will also like its Privacy Mode, which can be activated remotely. Coupled with the robust Wyze app, it’s a great option for frugal shoppers.

However, Wyze doesn’t have a spotless reputation when it comes to user privacy. An issue in February 2024 allowed strangers to look into others’ homes, which is a huge issue for a security company. The issue seems to be fixed, but if you’re worried about this track record, the Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam is a great alternative. It’s more expensive, but Ring has a better reputation regarding reliability and user privacy.
