The nominees for the 77th annual Golden Globes are here. Organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA), the Golden Globes honor both television and film and are traditionally seen as one of the more laidback ceremonies of the Hollywood awards season. The show is also considered by some to be an indicator of which films will eventually earn Oscar recognition. If that consideration holds true this year, then the Academy Awards may just be in for a streaming service invasion.

The show will air on NBC on Sunday, January 2020 and be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Despite its notoriety for television streaming, Netflix, made a surprisingly big splash in the feature film nominations this year. Noah Baumbach’s Adam Driver- and Scarlett Johansson-starring Marriage Story earned six nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Screenplay. It was joined in that category by Martin Scorsese’s heralded The Irishman, which received five total nominations, and Fernando Meirelles’ The Two Popes, which received four. Yes, 60% of the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category is comprised of Netflix films. Plus, Eddie Murphy vehicle, Dolemite is My Name earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.

In television, Netflix’s The Crown and Unbelievable joined HBO’s Chernobyl in leading the field with four nominations each.

Despite just launching November 1, AppleTV+ secured its first Golden Globe nomination with The Morning Show, which earned a nod for Best Television Series — Drama. Two of its stars — Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon — were also recognized in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama category. This gives AppleTV+ a firm foot in the door to awards season after its strategic launch right before the season.

The Globes have long failed to recognize the achievements of women behind the camera and the trend continued this year. Female directors have received fewer than 10 nominations in more than seven decades of the Globes. This year, several of the years’ top Best Picture contenders were helmed by women yet none received a nod. Tom Hanks was nominated for his portrayal of Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood but director Marielle Heller was not. Little Women‘s Greta Gerwig, The Farewell‘s Lulu Wang, and Hustlers‘ Lorene Scafaria also missed the cut despite recognition for their films and stars in other categories.

It’s not all grim, though, as Phoebe-Waller Bridge looks to continue her Emmy dominance with a personal nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy, as well as a Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy for her show Fleabag.

Perennial TV frontrunner HBO is surprisingly scarce on the nominations list. Although Chernobyl scored four nominations, and Big Little Lies was recognized in Best Television Series — Drama, stalwart Game of Thrones was hardly to be seen in its final year of eligibility and recent critic darling Watchmen didn’t score a single nod.

Meanwhile, Hulu failed to keep up with its streaming platform rivals. Ramy Youssef received a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical for his show, Ramy, but the show itself was not recognized. Hulu did, however, get a somewhat surprising nominee in the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television with Catch-22. Still, with only two nominations, Hulu trailed Netflix and Amazon by a wide margin.
