American Horror Story has been simultaneously delighting and terrifying its audience for five seasons now, but at present, the series is offering enigmatic anticipation. In the lead-up to season 6, FX has been toying with fans by releasing teasers and posters that are not actually related to the upcoming installment’s theme. With two more promos released today, the mystery continues.
The new promos, Anthology and The Harvest, are very different. While the former shows off elements from American Horror Story installments past, the latter introduces a group of creepy straw men who look as if they may be being herded by a young girl carrying a scythe. Both videos are creepy of course, but neither confirms the season 6 theme once and for all.
The network is enjoying the tease, and fans seem to be, too, based on their comments online. There has been plenty of speculation, and FX has offered some clues to stoke the flames.
“We just thought it would be really fun to keep it a mystery this year. And we are,” FX CEO John Landgraf told reporters during the network’s August 9 TCA, according to Variety. “They went out and made many more trailers than you’ve actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story. One of them is accurate.”
At the time Landgraf made his comment, he said that none of the teasers that had been released to that point revealed the true season 6 theme. One of the two new promos may offer insight, but it is also possible that they are just additional red herrings. However, since there is less than a month to go before the next installment begins, we will presumably see the real theme soon — if we haven’t already.
American Horror Story season 6 premieres on FX on September 14.
