It took just over 30 years for The Addams Family to recapture the public’s imagination after the 1991 film and its 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values. Wednesday not only reinvigorated Charles Addams’ signature creations, but it also became one of Netflix’s most popular shows, surpassing even Stranger Things. That’s why it was appropriate that The Addams Family‘s Christina Ricci had a part in Wednesday season 1, allowing her to pass the torch to the current Wednesday, Jenna Ortega.
Now that Wednesday season 2 has finally arrived on Netflix, we’re sharing everything we know about the new season, including its release schedule, what to expect, and more.
Like with season 1, Wednesday released eight episodes for its second season on Netflix. However, similar to Stranger Things, Wednesday had its release schedule for season 2 split up into two parts, refraining from sharing all the episodes at once like the show did in season 1.
The first four episodes of Wednesday season 2 premiered on August 6, 2025. Part 2 of the season, which consists of the other four episodes, was released less than a month later on September 3.
In a change from the first season, production shifted from Romania to Ireland for Wednesday season 2. The show will still be set at Nevermore Academy on the outskirts of Jericho, Vermont.
Filming began in May 2024, according to Deadline. Production for the entire season reportedly ran until the end of November. Via RTE, Tourism Ireland stated that filming took place at Charleville Castle in County Offaly, Dean’s Grange Cemetery in County Dublin, and Ashford Studios in County Wicklow. Filming also supposedly occurred in the towns of Kilternan, Clonliffe, and Roundwood.
Variety wrote that Wednesday has become “the largest production to ever film in Ireland,” in terms of production spending. Jenna Ortega shared her enjoyable experience filming in the new country for the show’s second season:
“I’d never been to Ireland, and it was wonderful. My favorite thing was just how kind the people are, but also, the countryside was really nice. I did my best to see as much of the island as I could while I was there. I went north, south, east, west, I went all over. I’m pretty proud of myself.”
Netflix first announced the cast of Wednesday season 2 with a picture of the new lineup, as seen above. In addition to Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, the following cast members from Wednesday season 1 were slated to return:
The extended members of Wednesday’s family were only guest stars in season 1, but they’ve been bumped up to series regulars this season. Percy Hynes White and Naomi J. Ogawa will not be back this season. White played Xavier Thorpe, one of Wednesday’s love interests in the first season, while Ogawa only had a minor role as Yoko Tanaka, a vampire student at Nevermore Academy.
Both Christina Ricci and Jamie McShane have been downgraded to guest stars playing Marilyn Thornhill and Tyler’s father, Donovan, respectively. Fred Armisen will also guest star in the series as Wednesday’s Uncle Fester again.
The season 1 finale set up Tyler as the potential villain for season 2. Wednesday actually started to have some romantic feelings for Tyler in the first season before she discovered that he was a Hyde, a monster who did Marilyn’s bidding.
While Thornhill (who was secretly Laurel Gates) seemingly perished in the first season finale, she is revealed to be alive at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Tyler also survived, and he began to seek his revenge on Wednesday in season 2.
The following cast members will also be series regulars this season:
Additionally, Netflix confirmed the following recurring/guest stars as well.
Lloyd previously played Uncle Fester in the two Addams Family movies from the ’90s. Lady Gaga’s casting in Wednesday isn’t surprising, given that she participated in the online trend recreating Wednesday’s iconic dance from the series. Gaga also added to it by performing a new song in the seventh episode of season 2.
Thing continues to stay by Wednesday’s side in season 2, with Thing’s hand performer, Victor Dorobantu, now a series regular. To mark the beginning of Wednesday season 2’s production, Dorobantu filmed a TikTok video of Thing’s skincare regimen for the new season.
Via Deadline, Ortega discussed the story for Wednesday season 2 while speaking to E! at the Emmy Awards in January.
“I’ve received some scripts now for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into a little bit more horror,” said Ortega. “It’s really, really exciting because all throughout the show [Wednesday] never really changes and that’s what’s wonderful about her.”
“There’s some really good one-liners, and I think everything is bigger,” added Ortega. “It’s a lot more action-packed. I think each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”
During an earlier interview with Variety, Ortega said, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.” Ortega also reiterated that the new season will have more horror elements, but added that the show won’t get too dark.
“Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously,” said Ortega.
In a nod to both her rising star in the industry and her part in making Wednesday such a massive success, Jenna Ortega is now a producer on the series moving forward. That gives Ortega more of a say in the creative process as Wednesday’s story continues.
Ortega has previously mentioned that she rewrote some of the dialogue in season 1 when she felt that it was out of character for Wednesday. Presumably, she has remained protective of her character in the new season, maintaining hope that her character will be done right for the rest of the series.
Wednesday co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar gave Netflix Tudum a brief synopsis for the show’s second season:
“This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore.”
“Nothing is what it seems in season 2,” Millar added. “Wednesday goes into this season thinking she knows Nevermore. It’s the first time she’s returned to a school willingly. But as soon as she gets back, nothing happens that she’s expecting. She thinks she’s going to be in control, that she knows where all the bodies are buried, and she doesn’t.”
In a video released in 2024, Ortega, Myers, Sunday, and Doohan spoke about some fan theories about what the upcoming season may include. They also confirmed that Wednesday season 2 would introduce a new member of the Addams family. This turned out to be Joanna Lumley’s character, Grandmama Hester Frump, Morticia’s estranged mother and Wednesday’s grandmother.
In season 2, Wednesday overused her psychic powers to solve crimes, causing her to lose them after the first episode. However, she still has a premonition of Enid’s death before her powers disappear. This twist is very concerning for fans of Enid, as she has become a lovable and crucial part of Wednesday’s life at Nevermore. This has only made the wait for the rest of the season even harder.
Despite her lack of powers, Wednesday is still able to uncover a conspiracy at Willow Hill, where outcasts have been imprisoned and experimented on in an attempt to transfer their powers to “normies.” In the fourth episode, Laurel Gates frees Tyler from captivity, but he pays her back by killing her. Then, in a shocking cliffhanger, Tyler throws Wednesday out the window, with part 1 ending with Wednesday lying on the ground, bloody and out cold.
Part 2 features many revelations. A comatose Wednesday encounters Larissa Weems, who is revealed to be her spirit guide and her distant cousin. Slurp is the corpse of Isaac Night, Tyler’s uncle. Enid realizes she is an alpha werewolf who can transform without a full moon. Tyler’s dead mother, Françoise, is alive and conspiring with Isaac to strip Tyler of his Hyde powers.
In addition, while Wednesday and Enid switch bodies, the former learns that Bruno is cheating on Enid. Principal Dort brainwashed Grandmama Frump to donate her fortune to Nevermore so he could steal it for himself. On top of that, Thing is the severed hand of Isaac, whom Morticia and Gomez killed when they were young.
There are also multiple deaths in Part 2. Isaac kills Judi and Professor Orloff. Principal Dort burns Arnold Hunt before the former is turned to stone and crushed by Ajax. Thing kills Isaac by ripping out his heart, and Françoise dies from a fatal plunge during her fight with Tyler.
Enid also transforms into an alpha werewolf to save Wednesday from being buried alive by Isaac. However, since she is unable to change back into her human form, Enid runs off into the wilderness. Wednesday thus sets off with Uncle Fester and Thing to find her. However, the season ends with Wednesday having a psychic vision of her Aunt Ophelia, imprisoned by Grandmama Frump and writing on the walls, “Wednesday Must Die.”
After Tim Burton directed the first four episodes of Wednesday, he returned to direct the first, fourth, seventh, and eighth episodes of the second season. Getting Burton to return to the director’s chair shouldn’t have been hard, given that he remains attached to the show as an executive producer.
Working alongside Burton as directors were Paco Cabezas (Penny Dreadful, The Umbrella Academy), who helmed production for the second and third episodes of season 2. Likewise, Angela Robinson (True Blood) directed the fifth and sixth episodes of the new season.
Yes. Wednesday was renewed for a third season in July 2025, just a month before the second season premiered. When discussing plans for the next season, Alfred Gough said:
“Our goal for season 3 is the same as it is for every season: to make it the best season of Wednesday we possibly can. We want to continue digging deeper into our characters while expanding the world of Nevermore and Wednesday. We will be seeing more Addams family members and learning more family secrets in season 3!”
Officially, not yet. Unofficially, Netflix has plans to expand the Wednesday universe. Bloomberg reported in late 2023 that a potential Wednesday spinoff centered around Fred Armisen’s Uncle Fester is under discussion. However, Netflix has not given the show the green light, nor has Armisen been confirmed to headline the possible series. Armisen would presumably need to sign alongside a creative team before Netflix moves forward with this spinoff.
In July 2025, Gough told Collider that he and Millar are more focused on the development of Wednesday at this point:
“It’s not a priority at the moment because…it’s how do we get Wednesday back faster than we did in season 2? So, we kind of went right from finishing season 2 to jumping right into developing season 3. So, it’s sort of all Wednesday all the time at the moment.”
Aside from Uncle Fester, the two most likely members of the Addams family who could potentially carry their own show would be Gomez and Morticia. The husband-and-wife duo is a package deal and is rarely seen without each other. If Netflix decides to pursue a Gomez and Morticia spinoff, Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones would presumably be asked to return.
