Jimmy Fallon keeps busy as the host of The Tonight Show, but he has proven willing to lend his talents to awards shows in the past. In 2017, he’ll do it again: He has been named host of the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will air on Sunday, January 8, 201,7 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.
Fallon has consistently been drawing late-night TV’s biggest audience, so he was a smart choice for the role. He’ll host an awards show that has remained strong in recent years, hitting 18.5 million live-plus same day viewers in 2016, according to Nielsen data.
“We’re thrilled to announce Jimmy as host of The 74th Annual Golden Globes,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement. “This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year.”
Fallon has already kicked off the jokes on Twitter by promising to “make the Globes Gold again,” a clear allusion to Donald Trump’s well-known campaign slogan.

We do expect the show to be a good one. The appeal of Fallon sense of humor is why The Tonight Show leads its rivals, and he’ll bring that to the awards show. He likely hasn’t started planning yet, but let’s hope that he busts out one of his always-entertaining collaborations with Justin Timberlake.
The show will be produced by Dick Clark productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Nominations for the awards will be announced as the event gets closer, on Monday, December 12.
