When Tim Burton’s in the mix, things are bound to get a little — peculiar. That’s a reason why the upcoming Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children always seemed like a natural fit for the director.

Three months after the first trailer for the film confirmed the above, a second trailer has emerged on the internet, and it gives us even more Burton being Burton, but it also adds an extra dimension to the mix — time travel.

Apparently, someone at the school (perhaps the eponymous Miss Peregrine?) has the power to create a time loop and infinitely reset a 24-hour period, a la Edge of Tomorrow. It’s an intriguing twist that should make for some creative (if confusing) plotting.

For those new to this world, the film is based on Ransom Riggs’ best-selling YA novel of the same name and tells the story of Jacob Portman, who ends up at the school after following a series of mysterious clues. Upon arriving, he quickly finds out that he might be somewhat peculiar himself.

If you find yourself thinking that this story sounds a bit like a darker, creepier X-Men, you’re not alone. It’s no accident that Jane Goldman — who helped write both X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past — was tasked with adapting this story for the big screen, and the parallels are quite obvious.

The story definitely seems to have a fairly distinctive character, however, and the marriage of Tim Burton and Eva Green (Miss Peregrine) is one that was surely made in some alternative, gothic, deviant version of heaven — which we suppose you could probably just call hell.

In any case, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is due in theaters September 30.
