Announced by Netflix earlier today, the streaming video company has renewed the popular superhero crime drama Daredevil for a second season. Set for debut on an unspecified date during 2016, the core actors and actresses have all signed on to return for the second season. That includes Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock, Daredevil), Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) and Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple).
One change that will occur is the loss of showrunner Steven DeKnight, who already committed to another project. Beyond Daredevil, DeKnight is well-known for creating the Spartacus series on Starz. To replace DeKnight, Netflix executives have announced both Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will step in, both who worked as producers on the first season as well as other shows that include Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Sons of Anarchy.

Renewing Daredevil was likely an easy decision for Netflix. The show has received accolades from both television critics as well as the general public. At the time of publication, the show has a 97 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a 9.2 rating on IMDB. While fans of the show can only speculate about villains in the next season, the first season opened up possibilities to facing off with The Hand and Bullseye in season two.
Of course, creating a second season of Daredevil could throw a curve ball into Marvel’s original plans for The Defenders saga. The original plan was to create one 13-episode season each of Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist as well as one 8-episode season of The Defenders.
A.K.A.Jessica Jones is currently in production and will be the next Marvel show to appear on Netflix this year. Luke Cage and Iron Fist are expected to follow in 2016, but now paired with a second season of Daredevil. The Defenders should be released in 2017 and may possibly have to weave in more seasons of the other Marvel shows, assuming Daredevil’s breakaway success can be repeated.
