Cue the “I’m back” references, because the first trailer for Terminator: Genisys has arrived online, complete with Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his role as the iconic T-800 android assassin.
Paramount Pictures released the trailer on the film’s official Facebook page, with a wide release on YouTube shortly thereafter. Along with featuring Schwarzenegger’s return as the original model of Terminator that began as the franchise’s villain and eventually graduated to a hero role, the preview also offers an explanation of sorts for the twisted timeline that the new, rebooted Terminator franchise spins out of.
Starring Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee, and Matt Smith, the new film follows future-soldier Kyle Reese (Courtney) as he’s sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor (Clarke), only to discover that she’s doing perfectly fine on her own, thanks to the protection of a T-800 called “Pops” (Schwarzenegger). As Reese struggles to comprehend the new timeline he’s been transported into, the film unfolds with a recreation of various events from the first two Terminator movies and a new, deadly villain.
Terminator: Genisys is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) and is scheduled to hit theaters July 1, 2015.
