After one of the great cliffhangers in the show’s history, I am incredibly eager to learn every detail about Stranger Things 5. Understandably, season 5, the finale of Netflix’s Stranger Things, has been one of the most highly anticipated events in television history. Since the evil Vecna succeeded in tearing open a massive gate to the Upside Down, we can now expect the heroes of Hawkins to engage in an epic final battle against the evil psychic and his army of monsters.

Now that the show has finally returned, many juicy details regarding the season to end all seasons have been revealed. Here’s everything that we have learned and what we should expect from Stranger Things 5.

Like Stranger Things season 4, the final season will be split into multiple volumes. Volume 1 (episodes 1-4) premiered on November 26, 2025, at 5 p.m. EST. Volume 2 (episodes 5-7) will premiere on December 25, 2025. The series finale is set to premiere on December 31, 2025. This entire season is a Thanksgiving feast, a Christmas gift, and a New Year’s bash for fans of the series.

Netflix Tudum revealed the first five minutes of Stranger Things 5 on a virtual livestream event on November 6 at 8 p.m. EST.

Since the season 4 finale got a theatrical screening, it seemed possible that the Stranger Things 5 finale would be shown in cinemas, too. On October 23, 2025, Netflix announced that the show’s finale episode would have limited theatrical screenings in over 350 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

These screenings will begin on December 31 at 5 p.m. EST and run through January 1, 2026. Tickets go on sale on December 2.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer said:

“We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters — it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to Ted [Sarandos], Bela [Bajaria], and everyone at Netflix for making it happen. Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”

On May 31, 2025, Netflix released a first look at Stranger Things season 5, including the episode release dates. While most of the video featured archival footage from previous seasons, it does show new footage of Joyce wielding an ax against a Demogorgon, Karen and Holly Wheeler holding each other in fear, and armed soldiers surrounding an orange light erupting from the floor. The video ends with Will screaming for everyone to run, heralding the arrival of something big and terrifying.

On July 16, 2025, Netflix released an official teaser for Stranger Things season 5. With Deep Purple’s Child in Time playing in the background, this exhilarating video features shots of Hawkins occupied by the U.S. military, with soldiers stationed in front of the Gate to the Upside Down. There are also shots of heroes facing off against Demogorgons, the Mind Flayer swirling up a radio tower, and Vecna returning with a spiky new form.

Netflix unleashed an incredible official trailer for the new season on October 30. The video shows the heroes of Hawkins, trapped in the town by the U.S. military, as they try to find and kill Vecna once and for all. The video shows the group venturing into the Upside Down and facing off against its monsters, culminating in armed soldiers facing a horde of Demogorgons. It all ends with Vecna lifting Will off the ground, saying that he will help him “one last time.” The trailer plays to the epic sound of Queen’s Who Wants to Live Forever, which was famously part of the soundtrack to Highlander.

A poster for Stranger Things 5 was released alongside the season’s official trailer on October 30. Illustrator Kyle Lambert, who worked on the posters for each of the show’s seasons, created this one. Once again, the show boasts an 80s-inspired visual style for its latest poster, which features a redesigned Vecna looming over the cast. Plus, Eleven and Will are located in the center of the image.

Season 4 spent a lot of time introducing a variety of characters like Eddie, Argyle, Dmitri, Yuri, Vecna, and Victor Creel, to name a few. This all contributed to the season’s extraordinarily long runtime, which many audiences took issue with.

Though there are some new additions to the cast, the final season will focus solely on the originals, which is undoubtedly a welcome move. Here’s a quick breakdown of who’s still in play:

Of course, there may or may not be a cameo — through a flashback or something — of Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson, who perished last season in a glorious battle of metal and blood.

When asked whether or not Eddie will appear, Quinn said, “I do know [the answer], but I’m not telling you.” Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

For the show’s first four seasons, Holly Wheeler was played by twins Anniston and Tinsley Price. However, Nell Fisher was cast as Holly, as the character was given a more prominent role in season 5.

According to Knight Edge Media, Netflix sought a new actor to portray Hopper’s dead daughter, Sara, as a 5-year-old in season 5. She was previously portrayed by Elle Graham in season 1. Since it appears that Sara will reappear, Hopper may still need to overcome the pain of his daughter’s loss, which should provide a satisfying climax to his character’s series-long arc.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Linda Hamilton revealed that she was contemplating retiring from acting when she was approached for her role in Stranger Things season 5. Hamilton cited physical pain as the reason she considered walking away from it all. But it turns out that her agent made the choice for her.

“I was getting ready to do season 3 of Resident Alien. I was like, ‘Dude, I don’t even know if I’m going to get there. I hurt.‘ (Laughs.) And he’s like, ‘Oh, you don’t mean that.‘ When I said retirement, cut to two weeks or so later, Stranger Things called him and said, ‘Is Linda Hamilton available from June to June?‘ And he went, ‘Yes.‘ He didn’t even ask me.”

Hamilton plays Dr. Kay, a recurring character in Stranger Things season 5. She is one of the figures leading the military during their occupation of Hawkins.

As for her future in acting, Hamilton said, “I’d come out of retirement to do [Stranger Things], yeah. And I think that’s going to give me another 15 minutes with a new audience, which is cool … I’m really happy. I’m really happy with the work I’m getting now. It’s not just Resident Alien and Stranger Things. I’m getting some good movie roles that allow me to not be the military person. I really just love the challenge. I just love acting.”

With the major questions out of the way, let’s discuss some of the other details we know or that the showrunners have confirmed.

Who’s *really* looking for Jane Hopper? You’re not ready for what’s to come in Stranger Things 5 #NextOnNetflix pic.twitter.com/Zql24JRxaS

Eleven can’t catch a break, can she? As part of the marketing campaign for Stranger Things 5, Netflix shared a post on X featuring a missing person’s poster for Jane Hopper. It states that she disappeared on June 13, 1986, and was last seen walking alone wearing a hooded jacket at Hawkins High School.

This isn’t the first time Eleven has gone missing in Stranger Things. However, season 5 has shown that she has been secretly training with Hopper in Hawkins to fight Vecna as the U.S. military continues to search for her.

As the show’s devotees will remember, Lt. Col. Jack Sullivan was trying to find and kill Eleven in season 4, believing her to be responsible for Vecna’s slew of murders. The fact that the Upside Down ripped through Hawkins around the time that she returned to town has made them even more committed to capturing her.

Netflix revealed that Stranger Things 5 will take place in the fall of 1987, near the anniversary of Will’s kidnapping. This places season 5 about a year after season 4 and around four years after season 1 began.

The show will supposedly jump from 1987 to 1988 as well, having made casting calls requesting vintage cars from 1988. It’s unclear whether the show’s conflict will last another two years or if the story will jump to a year after the heroes have finished their war with Vecna.

Season 4 of Stranger Things proved to be the show’s biggest yet in terms of scope. It followed the heroes as they lived separately and traveled through the U.S., Russia, and even the Upside Down. In contrast, the final season will follow the cast in Hawkins and the Upside Down. While that may not sound like anything new, the Upside Down did seep through the giant Gate that ripped through Hawkins.

Since then, the military has quarantined the town and boarded up the fissures formed by the Gate. They have also set up their own research facility within the Upside Down. Overall, season 5 spends a considerable amount of time in the Upside Down, as the main heroes and the military repeatedly enter this realm in their search for Vecna.

Season 5 revealed a new location in the world of Hawkins: the WSQK radio station. Radio devices have been crucial in previous seasons of Stranger Things, from the kids’ signature walkie-talkies to Eleven using radio to focus her telepathic powers. Not only do Robin and Steve run a radio show together, but they also use the station as a secret base during their hunt for Vecna.

Season 5 revealed that the heroes have spent almost a year searching for Vecna, who disappeared after the season 4 finale. Though some characters assumed he died from his injuries, unsurprisingly, he was revealed to have been alive.

Vecna was also revealed to have been using his psychic powers to speak to Holly, masquerading as “Mr. Whatsit.” Literary enthusiasts will recognize this as a reference to “Mrs. Whatsit,” a character in  A Wrinkle in Time. It makes sense that Stranger Things would reference this science fantasy novel, as both stories follow a group of kids who travel through interdimensional portals in a quest to defeat a cosmic evil entity.

Though Vecna told Holly that he would protect her from the monsters attacking Hawkins, he had one of his Demogorgons take her to the Upside Down and brutally wound her parents, Karen and Ted. This has made Mike and Nancy’s war against Vecna even more personal as they try to save their family.

However, Vecna has targeted and taken several other children in Hawkins the same way, saying they will be “perfect vessels” and easier to break in his plan for world domination. What the villain intends to do with them beyond hooking them up to his hive mind remains a mystery.

Will Byers played a pivotal part in the show’s first two seasons, as he was the first person to be dragged into the Upside Down and return alive. Though the third and fourth seasons explored Will’s isolation from his friends and his closeted sexuality, he has very much taken a back seat from the rest of the group.

However, Matt Duffer revealed to Collider that season 5 will focus on Will and show him “come into his own.” Some even claim he will have a love interest. Duffer also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that season 5 will finally answer why Will was taken to the Upside Down.

Season 5 began with a flashback to 1983, revealing that Vecna had infected Will directly just before Joyce and Hopper rescued the young boy in season 1. We then saw Will using his long-time connection to the Upside Down’s hive mind to search for Vecna with Robin. He saw through the Demogorgon’s eyes as it attacked the military and pursued the Wheelers. He could also see through Holly’s eyes as Vecna infiltrated her mind.

Will had a stellar hero moment when he used the hive mind to harness Vecna’s powers. He then used telekinesis to kill multiple Demogorgons that threatened his loved ones, finally reaching Vecna and Eleven’s level. With his newfound strength, Will could give the heroes the edge they need to defeat Vecna once and for all. Since the show began with Will’s disappearance, it’s only fair that it ends with him getting the spotlight.

In an article on Netflix Tudum, the Duffer Brothers revealed that the final season draws on many leftover ideas from season 2. That alone has significant implications, as the second season showed Will becoming possessed by the Mind Flayer and, therefore, Vecna. The heroes also used the tunnels formed beneath Hawkins in season 2 to sneak past the military and infiltrate the Upside Down.

In addition, season 2 showed Eleven exploring her past and reuniting with her “sister” from Hawkins Lab, Kali. After several years, Kali returned in season 5, revealed to have been imprisoned by the military and held in their lab in the Upside Down. With the superpowered Will and Kali now in the picture, they may team up with Eleven to stop Vecna, close the giant Gate, and save Hawkins.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers and executive producer Shawn Levy made it clear that the season’s storyline will be an emotional rollercoaster. “We did get our executives to cry, which I felt was a good sign that these executives were crying,” said Matt Duffer. “The only other times I’ve seen them cry were like budget meetings.”

Another little tidbit they shared is that the theme, tone, and experience would go “full circle,” meaning the fifth season will be more reminiscent of the show’s earlier seasons, just on a bigger scale. Whatever the case may be, we’re excited, and we can’t wait.

Levy also clarified that the story will center on the beloved characters. “Season five is already so clearly taking care of these stories of the characters because that’s always been the lifeblood of Stranger Things.”

Each season of Stranger Things has introduced a new breed of monster from the Upside Down. If season 5 follows this pattern, Vecna could pull out all the stops and introduce some new creatures to attack Hawkins. Nancy had a vision of a “giant monster with a gaping mouth” leading Vecna’s army of monsters in season 4. While she could be referring to the Mind Flayer (specifically its Spider Monster form in season 3), Comic Book Resources theorized that this creature is the dreaded Thessalhydra.

In Dungeons & Dragons, the Thessalhydra is a large, reptilian creature with eight heads all connected to an enormous mouth. This monster is presumably the one roaring and causing earthquakes in the Upside Down in season 4. The season 1 finale showed Will, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas fighting against the beast in their D&D campaign. Just as their first campaign in the series foreshadowed the Demogorgon, this small scene could have hinted at the Upside Down’s most fearsome creature yet.

Eight episodes have been confirmed for season 5. On November 6, 2024, in celebration of “Stranger Things Day,” Netflix released a video on X listing the titles of all eight episodes: The Crawl, The Vanishing of [UNKNOWN], The Turnbow Trap, Sorcerer, Shock Jock, Escape From Camazotz, The Bridge, and The Rightside Up, in that order.

In the fall of 1987, one last adventure begins. Stranger Things 5 coming 2025. pic.twitter.com/JNs5lznAwl

The second episode’s title was revealed as The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler, which showed a Demogorgon invading the Wheeler house and taking Holly to the Upside Down.

The sixth episode’s title says a lot. In the show, Holly refers to Vecna’s mind as “Camazotz” in another reference to A Wrinkle in Time. In this book, Camazotz is a dark planet ruled by the evil entity known as “IT.” This episode could show Holly escape Vecna’s nightmare world.

The final episode’s title also has strong implications about the series’ end. The phrase “The Rightside Up” is the opposite of “The Upside Down.” The choice of name implies that the season 5 finale will wrap up the war between Hawkins and the Upside Down and that everything will return to normal. Perhaps the Upside Down will be restored to its original state.

In an Instagram post, Ross Duffer revealed the runtimes for the first four episodes of season 5:

The Duffer Brothers also stated on Happy Sad Confused that the show’s last episode will have a runtime similar to season 4’s two-and-a-half-hour finale.

This will surely make for a big conclusion, and the Duffers have even stated that it will give “all the characters a proper send-off,” describing it as “Return of the King-ish with eight endings.”

The Duffer Brothers directed the first, second, fourth, seventh, and eighth episodes of the fifth season. Likewise, Shawn Levy, the show’s executive producer, directed the sixth episode and co-directed the seventh. Levy previously directed two episodes in each of the show’s seasons, including the fan-favorite Dear Billy.

Frank Darabont directed the third and fifth episodes of season 5. Darabont is famous for directing three acclaimed Stephen King movie adaptations: The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Since King’s works heavily influenced the Duffers in the making of Stranger Things, having a director well-versed in adapting such stories seems like a match made in Heaven.

Season 4 featured some major character deaths that shocked many audiences, including that of Eleven’s “papa,” Dr. Brenner. Though this isn’t the first time that Brenner appeared to bite the dust, the Duffers confirmed on Happy Sad Confused that the doctor is dead “for real this time.”

As for Max, she briefly died in season 4 after Vecna broke her bones, allowing him to create the giant Gate to the Upside Down. Though Eleven restarted her heart, Max was left in a comatose state. However, Max returned as a prisoner inside Vecna’s mind and has teamed up with Holly to escape.

As for who might leave the land of the living in season 5, we don’t really know, and there hasn’t been much shared about it. When asked about who will die next, actor Paul Reiser said he can’t tell anyone because he doesn’t know.

“If I tell you, a bullet… You see a little red light on me here? There’s somebody watching us at all times,” he joked. Based on this statement, Netflix is hiding spoilers with the same level of strict attention Marvel Studios applies to its releases. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Volume 1 of season 5 ended with Vecna kidnapping a lot of the children he targeted throughout the season, bringing them to the Upside Down. No doubt the heroes will continue their quest to rescue everyone from Vecna.

At the same time, Dustin realized that Hawkins Lab is at the center of all of Vecna’s latest kidnappings. Photos on X revealed that an Upside Down version of Hawkins Lab was built for the next season. This implies that Dustin, Jonathan, Nancy, and Steve will explore this alternate lab. However, Vecna could have also turned his former prison on Earth into his new fortress, meaning the heroes may walk into greater danger than before.

The Upside Down has long been one of the show’s greatest mysteries. This parallel world is an almost exact copy of Hawkins, but season 4 revealed it wasn’t like this when Vecna first arrived. Nancy also learned that the Upside Down only matched everything in Hawkins on the day the series began, the day Eleven first opened the Mothergate.

According to Netflix Life, audiences will finally get some concrete answers about this strange world in the next season. The Duffer Brothers even revealed in an interview that they have had a 25-page document outlining the show’s mythology, particularly the Upside Down, since its inception. “The only thing we don’t delve into in [season 4] volume 2 is Upside Down lore,” said Ross Duffer. “We hint at it. I’m sure someone on Reddit will be able to maybe piece it together, but a lot of those answers for the Upside Down, or that is really what the basis of season 5 is about.”

Season 5 showed Eleven and Hopper discover a massive, fleshy barrier inside the Upside Down, with Eleven unable to sense what was behind it. Dustin also discovered that this wall surrounds the entirety of Hawkins in the Upside Down. This is one of several mysteries that the show will hopefully answer later in the season.

The popular Netflix series took over London’s West End with its stage play prequel, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This story depicts the origins of Henry Creel and many of the show’s other adult characters. Stranger Things fans may want to follow this play, as the Duffers wrote to EW, “The First Shadow definitely gives fans some not-so-subtle teases and hints as to where certain storylines are heading in season 5. It touches on several themes and ideas that we will continue to explore in the show.”

In The First Shadow, it is revealed that Henry first entered the Upside Down (then known as “Dimension X”) while living in Nevada as a child. He returned to Earth 12 hours later with his psychic powers and an overwhelming urge to kill after the Mind Flayer infected him. This twist suggests that the Mind Flayer will be the show’s final antagonist after all, as it likely altered Henry’s memories to make him believe the life story he told Nancy and Eleven in season 4.

The play also revealed that Bob’s sister, Patty, shared a romantic bond with Henry before he became Vecna. Since Patty survives by the end of the play, she could return to Hawkins in season 5 to help stop Vecna.

So far, season 5 of Stranger Things has featured several references to The First Shadow. While Max was exploring Vecna’s memories, she found herself at Hawkins High School in the 1950s. There, a teenage Joyce is heard advertising a play she is working on, much like in The First Shadow. We also see that Vecna was scared to enter the rocky cave where Max was hiding. This cave is implied to be where he first entered the Upside Down in Nevada as a child, suggesting his repressed memory of this event still haunts him.

When talking about Stranger Things 5 with Discussing Film, David Harbour was upfront about how it needs to be its last season. “I think it’s a great show, even if I wasn’t in it,” he said. “Now we’re almost nine years from filming the first season, and I think it is time for it to end. But it is, of course, very bittersweet.”

Although this is the final season of the mainline series, we may see more Netflix shows and content set in the Stranger Things universe. The Duffers have teased a potential spinoff or two. While speaking to Variety, the Duffers said, “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things. New mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.”

At this point, Netflix will release the animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. Via Collider, this spinoff series is inspired by the Saturday morning cartoons that the Duffer Brothers grew up watching, such as Beetlejuice and The Real Ghostbusters. The revealed plot synopsis for the show reads:

“Welcome back to Hawkins in the stark winter of 1985, where the original characters must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town in Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an epic new animated series.”

There will also be another live-action spin-off. Apparently, Finn Wolfhard was able to guess the concept for the new show. “Somehow, Finn Wolfhard – who is one crazy smart kid – correctly guessed what it was going to be about,” wrote the Duffers. “But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

Whatever the spinoff’s story is, with the Duffers, we’re certainly in for a wild ride, so buckle up.

O the official X account for the Stranger Things writer room, an anonymous writer shared the following Tweet:

Season 5 is like if season 1 and 4 had a baby. And then that baby was injected with steroids.

Whoa! While not exactly detailed, the Tweet gives you a reasonable idea of what season 5 will be like: epic like season 4, but with a more personal touch like season 1. This makes sense, as the writers will most likely want to keep exploring the bigger picture and the truth about the Upside Down in the final season.

Because this is the last season, the writers also want to return to what made the show so special: a tight focus on the four friends — Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will — and how their bond helped those around them (Joyce, Hopper, Eleven, Nancy, Jonathan). With season 4’s finale leaving everyone back in Hawkins, it makes sense to focus on those characters again.

One of the actors happy to return to Hawkins is Wolfhard, who spent the majority of season 4 away from Dustin and Lucas. When he watched season 4, Wolfhard was “jealous” of the scenes in Hawkins, so he’s happy that the core group of characters will be together in season 5.

“Even when I finally watched the show, my favorite part was watching the other guys in Hawkins. I just liked that storyline so much,” Wolfhard told The Hollywood Reporter. “So, yeah, not being around everyone all the time was definitely a bummer about filming [Stranger Things] 4, but [Stranger Things] 5 is the opposite. We’re all together all the time.”

SHE BROKE IN?? #milliebobbybrown #strangerthings #eleven #strangerthings4 #strangerthingsedit #milliebobbybrownedit #interview #damselmovie #netflix

As for Eleven, Millie Bobby Brown said that, despite not knowing how the series ends, she saw her character’s ending written on the directors’ whiteboard, which left her stunned and made her walk away slowly. One can only imagine what kind of conclusion would leave her so shocked. Nevertheless, Brown hyped up the fifth season, saying the show’s final episodes are “unbelievable.”

Even Jamie Campbell Bower had some exciting things to say about season 5. “If you thought last season was nuts, this season is just out of control, wild, like it’s bonkers. It really, really is. It’s bigger. It’s just completely insane,” said Bower.

Several stars have voiced their angst regarding Stranger Things‘s inevitable end. Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin on the show, shared his somewhat sad feelings over the show ending on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Matarazzo shared more of his thoughts about the series coming to an end:

“I think it was just this weight that was officially lifted. I think we always forget how anxious the process of creating something from so long ago and not being able to see that light at the end of the tunnel, per se, or see that end in sight.

And after finally, recently having read everything that’s going to be on the page, it really was like this overwhelming beam of light that surrounded the whole crew and cast. And I remember we finished reading it, and it was just like a pure reminder of family. That’s like what the show is to all of us, and to be at wrap-up is intense, to say the least.

It’s bittersweet — lots of bitter right now because a lot of us are going to miss it like crazy, but we’re now really, really excited because we’re hitting semi toward homestretch of filming.”

On a similar note, Maya Hawke described making this final season as “heartbreaking” in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I mean, it’s the end of a really long journey,” she added. “Longer for some of my castmates, even, than me. So it is heartbreaking. “Though Hawke only joined the series in season 3, her breakout performance as Robin and the writing surrounding her made it seem like she was always a part of the show. It will surely be hard to say goodbye to Robin.

When it finally came to reading the script for the series finale, everyone in the cast was heartbroken, at least according to David Harbour. “The end of this episode, when we were reading it – just us reading it – about halfway through, people started crying,” he said. “Then, about the last 20 minutes, it was just uncontrollably crying, waves of different people. Noah Schnapp being my favorite.”

Nevertheless, much of the cast seems ready to move on from the show now that their careers have reached staggering heights. Harbour told Entertainment Weekly that he is keen on leaning toward starring in movies after the series ends.

“I’m trying to navigate some of that,” Harbour said. “It’s tricky because you don’t want to s*** on the people that love you for this thing that you did that you also love. But at the same time, you kind of want to leave the nest. I got more in me. I got different stuff in me, and I want you guys to see that. I don’t want people yelling ‘Hopper’ on the street every five minutes for the rest of my life.”

During an interview with Metro on the red carpet for the new Stranger Things play in London, the Duffer Brothers went on record to debunk a popular fan theory about the show’s ending. The theory claims that the series will turn out to be a long and elaborate D&D game played by the show’s main characters, explaining the numerous connections between the plot and the popular role-playing game.

However, the Duffers have outright denied the theory, with Matt replying with a firm “no” to the suggestion. Ross added that “would be the equivalent of ‘that’s all a dream.'” The siblings reiterated that “[they’ve] known where [they’ve] been going for a while” and “feel comfortable with it.” Fans must wait a little longer to see their ending, but at least they can rest easy knowing it won’t be a cop-out.

Behind-the-scenes photos show the cast and crew of Stranger Things having a blast filming the final season. After nearly spending a decade working and growing up together, it’s no wonder everyone’s having the time of their lives. Fortunately, Netflix is allegedly making a BTS documentary for the fifth season, so fans may be able to get a better glimpse of all the fun and camaraderie.
