Common OnePlus 7 Pro problems, and how to fix them

Have you run into a problem that's causing you serious frustration? We cover common issues, bugs, and annoyances you might experience on the OnePlus 7 Pro.

Despite now having reached the end of its life, the OnePlus 7 Pro is still a wonderful smartphone with bags of power and a truly stunning display. This flagship-level phone came with a flagship-level price though, and for that price you might expect perfection. Unfortunately, that’s almost never the case, and even the best built phones have problems now and again. We’ve dug around and compiled a list of common OnePlus 7 Pro problems, with advice on how to work around or fix them.

If you’re still getting to grips with your OnePlus 7 Pro, then check out the key settings we recommend changing and consider getting yourself a decent case and screen protector.

A number of users are complaining that they are having issues with Wi-Fi on the OnePlus 7 Pro after updating to Oxygen OS 11. These issues stem from Wi-Fi refusing to turn on, to it consistently toggling on and off, dropping your Wi-Fi connection.

Some users are complaining their apps are crashing a lot. The problem doesn’t seem to be limited to any specific apps, with users reporting disparate apps like TikTok and Gmail are suffering. This problem is related to the big Android System WebView update, and has hit a lot of different phones. Thankfully, there’s a fairly easy solution.

Another issue apparently related to the Android 11 update, users on the OnePlus forum have been complaining of flickering when the OnePlus 7 Pro’s display is set to 90Hz mode. This sort of flickering is obviously not good for your eyes, and can become very uncomfortable over a longer period of time. This seems to be a problem mostly for the OnePlus 7 Pro.

We reported on this OnePlus 7 Pro touchscreen issue, which has prompted several large threads on the OnePlus forum. People are suffering from phantom touches on the touchscreen which they aren’t responsible for. The problem seems to be random and most often happens on the top portion of the screen. Apparently, the CPU-Z app is a good way to test for the problem, as it seems to trigger consistent ghost touches, but they are happening intermittently for sufferers in a variety of apps.

We’ve seen threads at the OnePlus forum and the XDA Developers forum about the “OK, Google” voice command either not working at all or only working intermittently on the OnePlus 7 Pro. For some people, it seems random, while others report that it only fails to work when the phone is unlocked. There are a few different potential solutions you can try.

Even with a modern chipset and 12GB of RAM, mishandling a smartphone can lead to lag, or in the worst case, an unresponsive screen. Sadly, this seems to happen more often than we expect with numerous users on Reddit reporting issues with their screens.

Even though the OnePlus 7 Pro has a big, 4,000mAh battery, we haven’t been impressed by its stamina. With battery life and overheating, much depends on how you use your phone. You have to accept that long gaming sessions with graphically intensive games are going to use up a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. People are discussing their experiences in this OnePlus forum thread, and not everyone is happy.

This is an ongoing problem with the OnePlus 7 Pro, and it seems hardware based, as there are still complaints coming in two years later. The best advice if you’re absolutely sick of a warm phone is, well, to look at buying a new phone.

There are threads at Reddit and the XDA Developers forum concerning incoming calls and text messages failing to come through at all or dropping instantly on pick up for people using the OnePlus 7 Pro on Verizon. Outgoing calls and texts seem to work just fine. Luckily, this should be easy to sort out.

While in-display fingerprint scanners are futuristic (and cool to use), they’re still not as reliable as the physical fingerprint scanners of the past. From high rates of unsuccessful unlocks to wet finger issues, many OnePlus 7 Pro users have shown dissatisfaction with their in-display fingerprint scanners. Here are some possible fixes for the most effective fingerprint scanning.

Auto-brightness is the feature in your phone that causes the screen to automatically dim or brighten based on the light in your current environment. The tool is a life-saver when it comes to saving your phone’s battery life, and it can be a relief for your eyes. That said, when this feature isn’t working in top-form, it can be frustrating to get blasted by a bright screen. Some users have complained this feature doesn’t work consistently on their OnePlus 7 Pro. They say that they don’t get a smooth shift in brightness levels like the company promises. Instead, their display brightness will flicker, change to an incorrect level, or never adjust at all.

Google Play is borrowing one of the Nintendo Switch’s most useful little tricks. A new Sidekick tool called Playbacks captures a short clip after something interesting has already happened, sparing players from running a screen recorder throughout an entire game.

Playbacks is part of Google Play Store v53.8 and keeps saved clips on the phone. Google first announced it earlier this month, but the new Play Store update marks its arrival for players. Anyone who has watched a perfect win vanish because the record button came too late already understands the appeal.

Samsung’s scandal over its Game Optimizing Service, or GOS, has returned with a bill attached. South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission has tentatively fined the company 20.1 billion won, or about $15.1 million, over gaming claims made for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S22, and Tab S8.

The regulator says Samsung promoted the devices as gaming powerhouses without disclosing that GOS placed preset CPU and GPU limits on certain demanding games. Samsung disputes that conclusion, calling GOS a legitimate way to manage heat.

Apple's next cheaper iPhone could get a brand-new processor while keeping its most stubborn display compromise. Digital Chat Station tips the iPhone 18e for a 2027 release with a 2nm A20 chip and a 6.12-inch OLED screen still limited to 60Hz.

The rumored camera setup includes a single 48MP rear camera and a possible 24MP selfie camera. There's new hardware to consider, but buyers hoping Apple would extend that upgrade generosity to smoother scrolling could be disappointed.
