Samsung patents self-healing camera and fingerprint sensor for foldables

What’s happened? The Korean tech giant Samsung has developed a self-healing technology for the punch-hole camera system and the fingerprint scanner on foldable smartphones, increasing the overall durability and reliability.

Why is this important? The innovation has been designed to address a long-standing engineering problem for foldables, which involves safely integrating the camera and fingerprint scanner under the screen without damaging the delicate ultra-thin glass displays.

Why should I care? You should care about this technology because it helps make foldables more durable. Given that mainstream foldables are significantly more expensive than regular smartphones, buyers are often concerned about their longevity. The new technology can address this issue to a certain extent. In other words, we could finally get under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensors on the Galaxy Z foldable lineup in the coming years.

OK, what’s next? If Samsung pulls off implementing this patent technology, it will help foldables move into the mainstream, with fewer concerns about durability (mostly related to the hinge and the display). Furthermore, competitors may develop similar solutions for their foldables, potentially starting a trend in the industry. However, take this information with a grain of salt, as the technology is still under patent, and nothing can be said about its arrival on a mainstream handset anytime soon.

It’s surreal to see a device like that come to life. At least on the global stage. Huawei has already done it a couple of times with the dual-folding Mate XT pair, but that device leaves an exposed screen edge, runs a non-Android experience, and remains far away from the Western markets, including the US.
